My father told me this story when I was a young man and it needs to be passed on to this generation.
“Businesses lie, governments lie and people lie; most of the time intentionally and sometimes unintentionally. If you want to know the truth, and some people don’t want to because it is too painful, you must be willing to listen to all sides of the issue. If you can, get the two sides to debate; adversarial debate is the basis of our legal system. And if you can, look at the raw evidence for yourself; it is far harder to fake the evidence than to baffle people with bullshit. Due to all of the liars in society, unbiased truth rarely lands in your lap; you have to turn over rocks to find it.”
